All Maes Hughes is, he feels he owes to his father. His father, Howard Hughes, was a career police officer who nonetheless had time for his family. Through Howard, Maes saw the importance of loyalty, dedication, and love. But as Maes grew older, overt corruption began to drag down many departments. Howard was a man set in his ways, who believed in never breaking loyalty once pledged. This served to be his undoing, and even through his death, Howard taught Maes.

Maes joined the same police force that murdered his father, not out of some sense of obligation to his country, but out of a drive to seek, find, and eliminate those lurking in the shadows. When he married Gracia, this drive grew deeper, because he now had someone specific to protect. Now that Elysia, his daughter, is on the scene, he is more focused than ever.

But, thanks to his father, Maes hasn’t lost sight of the importance of family. Maes enjoys taking time to spend with Gracia and Elysia, and brags about them whenever he has the chance. They are, in his mind, what has kept him sane, kept him from living only to hunt down.

He feels responsible for Gracia and Elysia, as well as the good officers he has worked with through the years: Roy, Havok, Hawkeye, Breda… even Scieszka. He’s learned where true loyalty belongs, something his father never really figured out – to the people around him that matter, instead of an institution.

Seeing the massive web of corruption and intrigue in the highest places of the police force is daunting, but Maes knows he’s here for a reason. For his family, for his friends, and for the memory of his father, he will stand firm.
