I know I wanted time off work to be with my family, but I'd prefer if it wasn't because my little girl caught whatever it was going around. I can't blame Breda, even if he was at the conference and should have known better, since he did come to play with her and that was a nice thing. I just wish Elysia wasn't sick. They keep bustling around, telling me not to worry, but I really can't help it.

So here I am in a hospital room, reading the same file for the fifteenth time and still it doesn't make sense.

Gracia will be back from getting dinner soon, then Daddy might take a nap...

Work and fun

September 30th marks the end of the fiscal year for the government, and guess who has to record all the warrants that haven't been served? It's mostly domestic disputes, but there's one on my list that needs to be taken care of. And I'll be taking care of it personally, I think. So much paperwork, though! Daddy would rather be taking pictures of his darling than filling out forms about how deadbeat boyfriends left the state...

But it's not all paperwork! The Rock Band thing was fun. And I found out some fantastic news! I can succeed at playing Cupid! And I also found out not to mention this to Gracia. I hate sleeping on the couch. I wasn't meddling. Much.

Hm. I need to find a babysitter for tomorrow night...

Saturday evening should be interesting.

Elysia's favorite Disney character used to be Goofy, but after the cruise, it's Tigger. She spent every day bouncing and doing her best impression of him! And thankfully for Mommy and Daddy, this meant she slept like a rock every single night!

The pool was fantastic, the shows were excellent, and there was too much food. Nobody tell Bradley, but I'm thinking of avoiding my desk for about a week and doing some streetwork to work some of this off. I'm not just avoiding the pile of paperwork I know is on my desk. Not in the least.

I should get more active after work as well. Elysia has playdates, Gracia is starting a pottery class. I need to pick up something.

I heard a rumor we have a new officer? This is good news if it's true!

And, of course... I have pictures from the cruise, and other various shots of Elysia! You know where to find me if you want to see them, and you know you do!

I'm not sure how much we should trust Anko or bring her into the fold. She had a very chummy conversation with Aizen that lead to a lunch date being set up, and we know he is the main suspect in at least the first Hummer attack. Stay on your toes with her. Use her. Let her do what she can for the city, but don't give her anything we aren't obligated to give. I'm not ready to trust her. If someone finds something on her, good or bad, share it with the group, please.

Furthermore, I've spoken with the media. They understand the need to cease giving the attention-hungry criminal attention, and the need to not air anything else by or on the culprit.

I love stupid criminals. They make my day easier. Like the ones who punch in a window with a bare fist and then wind up calling 911 themselves because they've lost a lot of blood.

Gracia made blueberry pancakes this morning, and blueberry syrup, and Elysia help set the table.

And Bradley even joined in and granted a favor.

I think I liked today.

As you may have guessed, Bradley granted the favor I talked with you about! I had to promise no more ball-pits in the offices, but it was a fair enough trade off. See him when you get the chance to swear in officially, and take care of the needed paperwork. Welcome, Officer Sasuke.

Holding the fort

So of the people currently not assigned elsewhere, Havoc's off visiting somewhere, Cissnei's got a relative in town, and Sasuke had to go somewhere. This leaves... me and Kankuro. I'm getting the feeling we're understaffed.

There's Ed in the crime lab too... Ed! How have you been? Did you and your visitor want to come over for dinner? Or we could give him a tour of the department? Emil seems like a very nice young man.

I have pictures from our zoo trip! Here's Elysia playing around. There's a lot more, but I'll spare those who don't want to see it.

Cissnei, I hope your cousin's visit went well. Havoc, I hope whatever you're doing went well. Sasuke, the same.

Back to the cases for me. At least we wrapped up the two robberies quickly. Granted, the one kid was an idiot. Asking for the cashier's phone number, and then calling her and arranging for a date? The cashier is still laughing.

Emil seems nice... but impressionable. And he's hanging around Imre. This is a problem, but it's not like I have tons of time on my hands. It's also not like the kid knows me enough to care what my opinion is. But we don't need another Imre running around the city.

Cissnei... how much can I trust her? I want to trust her, but her reasons... I still don't know them.

I needed those days to recharge, I think. I'm glad I took them. I have new pictures, too, now! We took Elysia to the zoo, and she was pretending to be all of the animals! She's adorable!

Maybe I'm not the world's best police officer, but I can try to be the world's best daddy. :D

I will admit that the police department is under a heavy load at the moment. However, our motivations are clear - to protect and serve.

... I think I'm going to ask the courts to come up with an actual crime name and punishment for baby-swapping. It's pretty tiresome when some new crime just doesn't fit...

The San Francisco Police Department has been authorized to arrest and detain Imre Kasch, currently going by the name of 'Envy,' for trespassing. Depending upon what time he is taken into custody, he will be held for up to 24 hours before being tried.

Stupid misdemeanor charges. I wish we could get him better. A fine. How ridiculous. I know he's going to go on to do worse. Just look at what he says. At least we've already got a plain confession of what he did in the hospital, though.

Ladies and Gentlemen and Roy of the SFPD, we need to discuss what's going on and compare notes. We have a mess on our hands.

Two events occurred Thursday, and I'm pretty sure they're connected: The Hummer crash into the ShinRa building and the disappearance of a Miss Kusajishi Yachiru, as well as possibly Rufus ShinRa's dog. I haven't heard anything certain on Dark Nation, the dog.

I need your thoughts, and what you know. The driver's body never made it to the hospital, and the Hummer didn't make it to the crime lab. We have no physical evidence of the girl's kidnapping, nor do we know where exactly it happened, as far as I know.

Edward, please tell me you saw or found something while glancing at the Hummer?

Keep also in the back of your minds the possibility that this is related to the recent crime spree. Is someone out to make ShinRa look bad? Or the Police? Or do all of these events really have nothing to do with each other? (And where, darnit, did my picture of Elysia with a duckling go? I know it was on my desk this morning. If someone hid it, I might have to cry...)

Feel free to discuss the Hummer and crash stuff with all police. I don't think Rufus knows yet who is behind it, and it's in Cissnei's and his best interests to, forgive me, use us in this. And I think we should let ourselves be used, within reason, in the crash matter. Better the spy you know, after all.

But with the kidnapping I want everything that is not already public or available to Cissnei to stay private between the five of us. ShinRa has been doing everything it can to hush up the disappearance of Miss Kusajishi, and that makes me highly suspicious. Did she find something that Rufus wanted hushed up? Was he afraid she'd talk? I don't like their response, and I want to keep Cissnei as far out of this as possible. Bring up the publicly known stuff about the case, though. We want to keep her feeling in the loop.

Havoc, I know you spoke to the father? Sasuke, you did as well? I saw the news, but there wasn't anything useful there.

It started with a fantastic party at 7th Heaven which has excellent appetizers, and I really must take Gracia there in the future.

Tea with Sasuke was wonderful. He enjoyed my pictures of Elysia! Roy, I may wind up replacing you with him. He has an excellent eye.

And then, the picnic! Food, and friends, and chatting! It wasn't the most... happening... event, but people showed up and talked!

The lab gave me a slight bit more information on the paint from the hit-and-run. Apparently it was done by an older car that was once white, and is now a pale blue. So. I'm just looking for an older, pale blue car. At least with needles in haystacks there's a clear sign when you find the needle! But I'm not letting go. There will be a break.

Roy! You! Me! Drinks and Darts! I even have some new accidental shots of my thumb we can use as targets!

Interesting discovery this week, completely inadvertent. Cissnei works for ShinRa. A dart night would not be entirely relaxation, since we need to see how we'll use this. Do we give her misinformation to give to Rufus? How much can we rely on her? Her private message for me before the St. Patrick's Day party asked what I wanted her to look for. I'm betting Rufus wants to know who and what we're watching.

Party-hopping

I've already spent one night in a bar this week, but I want to spend an afternoon off too.

Thursday.

I'm bringing the big checkered blanket, a dozen deviled eggs, iced tea, bunch of cucumber sandwiches, and a whole basket of cookies and brownies. As well as some kites. I'll be in Willow Lake Park, on top of the big hill that would be great for sledding down if it ever snowed here.

Any members of the SFPD - cadets, officers, psychologists - come! Bring yourselves, some food and drinks, and hang out.

Otherwise sitting on that hill will be very lonely. At least I'll have good food. And kites.

Anyways, Miss Tifa, you have an excellent venue, and I'm certain I'll be patronizing the place more often, and bringing my wife along sometimes too!

I don't think Sasuke is upset by you as much as he's just frustrated at the moment. I think he has potential. His reaction to negligence is very promising. I'll be meeting him tonight; I'll tell you how it goes.

Was interesting, seeing Naraku with the other there, as well as Aizen. I made note of everyone who went up to him and talked with him, though obviously some were just talking for conversation's sake. If you can help me put names to faces later, it would be much appreciated.

According to Miss Kusajishi's entry, Reno is currently in charge of ShinRa with a 'Rude' while Rufus is away. He's pretty high-placed, apparently. This bears keeping an eye on. Very glad I've got Gracia taking in-depth self defense courses, as well as Tae Kwon Do. I don't know what I'd do without her. And she understands... She's perfect.

I want a picnic still.

I promise to bring only one roll-worth of Elysia pictures, if we can have a SFPD picnic. Please? This is a huge sacrifice I'm making here!

Oh well. It's lasagna for dinner tonight! I'm in a pretty good mood even though I still haven't gotten a clue about the hit-and-run the other morning, though. It wasn't the car driver's fault, from what I can tell, but they still left the scene, and that causes problems. The car was dark, which helps not at all.

Elysia painted me a picture today! It's a seal balancing a ball on his nose in a circus! And there are clowns, and a ring master too. Elysia, Gracia, and I are apparently all there, the three dots near the top are our heads. Isn't it great?

ShinRa. There's something going on there. I don't know much of anything yet, though. Cato denies there being anything dirty in town, while Uchiha confirms it's well known. I advise keeping an eye on Cato. She might just be naive, though. Also, wasn't there an Austin's double-homicide recently, with vague, weak ties to ShinRa, solved by you, Roy? A ShinRa employee is fond of it. Nothing to work with yet, though I've got a possible contact. Something rotten in the state of Denmark indeed.

So how are things working out with Cato?

I'm hearing rumors about high-placed city officials, and their past... Nothing certain, nothing substantial. But anything you've heard could be of interest.

This is a bit out of the blue, I know, but I know your brother very well, and would trust him with my life. The few times he's mentioned you, it's been favorable. Trusting to this, I have a favor to ask. I'm looking into ShinRa, and they have a secretary, Yachiru. Hobbies/Extracurricular Activities: Taking pictures of Elysia, developing pictures of Elysia, showing Roy pictures of Elysia, bragging about Elysia, throwing knives, playing with Elysia… just about anything with Elysia, really. Except the knives. Not with Elysia.

Brief History: All Maes Hughes is, he feels he owes to his father. His father, Howard Hughes, was a career police officer who nonetheless had time for his family. Through Howard, Maes saw the importance of loyalty, dedication, and love. But as Maes grew older, overt corruption began to drag down many departments. Howard was a man set in his ways, who believed in never breaking loyalty once pledged. This served to be his undoing, and even through his death, Howard taught Maes.

Maes joined the same police force that murdered his father, not out of some sense of obligation to his country, but out of a drive to seek, find, and eliminate those lurking in the shadows. When he married Gracia, this drive grew deeper, because he now had someone specific to protect. Now that Elysia, his daughter, is on the scene, he is more focused than ever.

But, thanks to his father, Maes hasn’t lost sight of the importance of family. Maes enjoys taking time to spend with Gracia and Elysia, and brags about them whenever he has the chance. They are, in his mind, what has kept him sane, kept him from living only to hunt down.

He feels responsible for Gracia and Elysia, as well as the good officers he has worked with through the years: Roy, Havok, Hawkeye, Breda… even Scieszka. He’s learned where true loyalty belongs, something his father never really figured out – to the people around him that matter, instead of an institution.

Seeing the massive web of corruption and intrigue in the highest places of the police force is daunting, but Maes knows he’s here for a reason. For his family, for his friends, and for the memory of his father, he will stand firm.

Role-playing Sample:
Maes walked into the police department, armed and dangerous. His eyes scoured the desks, searching for his target. At first glance, the subject was not in evidence, but then there was a flicker of movement. Maes focused, and stalked with deadly intent towards the person in hiding. He got close enough so that the victim would have no escape. He pulled out his ammunition.

“Roy! Look! I just got pictures from Elysia walking with Gracia when they were shopping! She’s ador—Roy? Roy… you aren’t looking. They’re precious! She’s… why is the entire office emptying out? Is there a meeting? A donut sale? Ro—oh. He’s gone too.”

Maes’ shoulders slumped momentarily, until he caught sight of an unsuspecting passer-by. He dashed out the door, grinning ear to ear. “Today is your lucky day! You’ve never seen pictures as adorable as these before!”
